Personal Instruction
Topics to Choose From:
Foundations of Photography
Beginning photographers interested in mastering great photographic techniques from the start. We'll cover exposure and composition, spending as much time as necessary in whichever topic you feel you have the most need. Or, you can choose the topics you would like instruction on, covering any of the topics listed below. Instructional setting is flexible, but generally will involve a mix of classroom instruction and in the field practice sessions.
Mastering Exposure
We use spot metering and manual mode, and most photographers that travel with us either know this method or wish they did, but learning this while on a safari is a bit challenging! We'll explain how a meter 'thinks' and how you can make great exposures by taking control of your camera, and not letting it do the guesswork for you! Instructional setting is flexible, but generally will involve a mix of classroom instruction and in the field practice sessions.
Composition
Effective, powerful images are made, they don't just happen. We'll cover the essentials to composition, the informal checklist of items to consider when composing a great image. Instructional setting is flexible, but generally will involve a mix of classroom instruction and in the field practice sessions.
High Speed Flash, Using Remotes and Camera Tripping Devices
Understanding and using flash effectively is perhaps the most challenging and intimidating task most photographers face. Yet the concepts are simple when understood, and you will understand how flashes work, why they have limitations, and how incorporating that knowledge will allow you to make images that are extremely powerful and possible in no other way. Should time and interest allow, we'll also cover the use of remote camera-firing devices and camera tripping devices to make images with unmanned cameras.
Photography in the Field
Instead of working theoretically in class, we'll use the outdoors as our classroom, shooting images and discussing technique as it applies to the scenes. Exposure, composition, use of lenses, and other topics might be covered, depending upon subject matter and the equipment you have. These personalized sessions can be held anywhere, and we'll travel to your location if necessary. Please note, however, that instruction held outside of the commuting range of Hoot Hollow, Pa. will be subject to extra charges covering transportation, food and lodging, and the time involved in travel.
