Sri Lanka - A surprising wildlife hotspot

Located off the southeastern coast of India, Sri Lanka (formerly known as the Island of Ceyland) is a country of surprising wildlife diversity. Since tigers are absent, Asiatic Leopards rule the island, and this subspecies is the largest of them all, and are bold and fairly common in many national parks.

While Leopards are a target species for our Photo Tour, there are many other species that are easier to photograph here than in most, or all, locations in India. Sloth Bears are fairly common, and Asiatic Elephants gather in large herds in two of the Parks we'll be visiting.

Besides a diversity of mammals, the Bird and Reptile and Amphibian photo opportunites are surprisingly productive. Many of the species we may see in India are common in Sri Lanka, truly surprisingly so. Bengal Monitors, for example, are seen almost every day in several national parks, yet one is lucky to see just one on a typical India trip. Endemic birds (approximately 35) are unique, and you can expect to photograph most of these species on the photo tour.

Our Photo Safari

We'll be visiting multiple locations that will cover a diversity of habitats, from the high country where Sambar Deer and interesting endemic Lizards like the Rhino Horn Lizard are found, to the coastal national parks where we'll photograph Leopards, Sloth Bears, and a wide diversity of birds.

Some of the national parks in Sri Lanka are very crowded, and we will not be visiting these! Instead, lesser known, and less frequently visited parks offer the same subjects in far more favorable conditions and these are the parks we'll visit. To minimize plagarism and blatant copying of our itineray we're keeping those locations private, but you can be assured that we will bemaximizing our opportunities for photographing an incredible diversity of wildlife.

We'll be visiting an ancient temple where several species of monkeys - Purple-faced Leaf Monkey, Gray Langurs, and Torque Macaques - are common and tame, making for spectacular images. Near by we'll stop at a fantastic Flying Fox (giant fruit bats) day roost, the best I've ever seen.
